I've been a big fan of Robert Kirkman's successful zombie comic, The Walking Dead, pretty much since it debuted. This gritty black-and-white series has the tone and feel of a Romero Living Dead film, but features much better writing. I've also been a fan of the traditional superhero comic off-and-on since I was a kid. I know the Marvel Universe and its history pretty thoroughly.
Consequently, when it was announced that Kirkman would be writing a limited series called Marvel Zombies, I was pretty excited. The series spun out of a short arc from Ultimate Fantastic Four where the young heroes visit an alternate universe, similar to the original Marvel Universe of the 70's and 80's, but where the heroes became zombified and rapidly ate most of the world. Great concept! The writing is super-fun, but also retains a touch of that Romero-esque quality that Kirkman brings to The Walking Dead.
The covers of these books, all beautifully painted by Arthur Suydam, are each a zombified parody/homage of classic iconic Marvel covers. The original series and its covers were so popular it went into multiple reprints of most every issue, all with new Suydam covers. Then there's the subsequent covers for the various printings of hardcover collection. Then the sequel in Ultimate Fantastic Four. Then a crossover with Ash and the Army of Darkness, plus tie-ins and sequels and prequels galore! And most every Marvel Zombies comic that comes out features a new Suydam homage.
I loved all these covers so much, I wanted to make sure I could always find them. So here they are!
